Think you can’t combine a young family and being self employed?

Going back to shift working after a year of maternity leave I realised that something had to change.  I was working from 7pm-2am and felt that I was really missing out on time with my husband in the evenings and being too tired to enjoy my daughter during the day.

I handed in my resignation and started a Total Pet Services franchise the next week. As my business grew I was able to condense my working hours around lunchtime and do my admin and promotional activities in the evening which meant that any childcare costs were kept to a minimum (we don’t have any family close by to help).

Within a year my business had grown enough for me to cut down to working 3 days  a week 10am-3pm and employed 2 other ladies to work on the other days for me. I also built up a small team of ad hoc carers/walkers that I could call on if needed.

HugoTwo years after starting my business I had another baby. By this time I had moved away from doing the walking myself and now had 4 people covering this throughout the week. I concentrated on daycare and boarding which meant that I could work from home and have the flexibility to look after my children.

Three years on I am due to give birth to another baby any day now. My day care and walking dogs are being well looked after by my dedicated team of 4 people and I have the time during the day to spend time with my children while I take a few months off with a newborn. I still do my admin and promotional work in the evenings but this is my choice. I feel very lucky to have such a good work/life balance whilst earning a very comfortable amount of money, even after paying staff costs.

I would recommend this franchise opportunity to anyone. You will get unlimited support from the very beginning to ensure your business is a success. You will never be pressured to work more hours than you are comfortable with. If I can do it with 3 children under 4 years old then anyone can!
